You know spring is in the air, when the Farmers Markets start to bloom with stalls of flowers, and we found the earliest signs of this fresh colorful season during our visit to the Farmers Market in Alexandria VA. What makes this market really special is that it is thought to be the oldest continuous market in our nation’s history. When you come to Alexandria on Saturday morning you will find yourself in a busy plaza where local farmers and artists have been selling their products since 1753. George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at this market. What a great way to connect with history.
We wandered through the stalls of those braving the chilly weather to be the first vendors of the new market season and the square was already alive with dog walkers, shoppers and those out for a little fresh air and conversation. We made a promise to ourselves to come back later in the season to really experience the profusion of produce and artisan work that we knew would be abundant at the market later in the summer. As it was, you could already sense a festive atmosphere at the market and we had a great time soaking it in!
